By: Sheila Castillo New Club Alert: Join The Film Club!
Freshman Class Council President, Alishah Castillo, is starting a new presidency with the Film Club. The club's mission statement is "to create a community for people who love watching and creating all types of film." Only in the 9th grade, Alishah has big goals set for the club this year including working with the St. Monica's Parish Film Club, a mock Oscar's, and hosting the first SMCHS Film Festival. So take your cameras out (or popcorn if you just like to sit back and enjoy a movie, like me) and we hope to see you at future events! If you have any questions, email [email protected]. Pre-Med Club Preps for their Blood Drive On January 27, the Pre-Med Club had a guest speaker, Nina Minton, speak about blood drives. Club President, Alexandra Bachawati, and Club Moderator, Dr. Griffis, organized this event to inform club members about the process and importance of donating blood and the role of the American Red Cross (AMC). The Pre-Med Club hopes to partake in the AMC's mission to "fulfill needs of American people by providing partners with safe and reliable blood products" by hosting our own SMCHS blood drive. Currently, only 3% of people around the world donate blood and American Red Cross is responsible for providing 40% of our nation's blood. We encourage all those above the age 16 and in good health to participate in our blood drive. You will first fill out a questionnaire, followed by a physical, and then you can donate a pint of blood, which usually takes about 8-10 minutes. If you can't donate blood, the pre-med club will also be taking volunteers to help ease the process. The projected date is April 7th and we hope to see you there! Any Questions? Email [email protected] Boxing Club The Boxing Club, run by senior Isabella Juarez, is one of our newest club additions from the 2021 - 2022 school year. Although Isabella is the president, the club was started by Coach Kyle in memory of Father Dave, who was a big fan of boxing and wanted to witness the start and progression of a boxing club at St. Monica's High School. Since last semester the club has been meeting every week on Monday and Wednesday from 7 to 8 am. These early morning training sessions occur in our weight room and consist of weight training, core exercises, boxing drills, and activities on the turf. The Boxing Club hopes to empower its members through the art and discipline of boxing. Any questions? Email [email protected]. By: Sheila Castillo
